Artistic Extended Reality at HKU
AXR Lab is part of the Lectoraat (Dis)Connected Technology & Creativity, and HKU’s hub for practice-based research, design, development, and education in artistic extended reality. We explore XR not only as a medium of expression, but as an embodied design environment and catalyst for interdisciplinary collaboration.
At AXR Lab, we believe XR experiences always emerge through the interplay of physical and virtual space. Whether we’re building immersive performances, experimenting with virtual production, or designing multi-user environments across locations, our work is grounded in the body: in how we sense, move, and connect.
Our lab space is designed as a modular studio: part blackbox theatre, part collaborative playground. Here, makers, students, and researchers work side by side with tools like real-time 3D graphics, motion tracking, spatial audio, and networked XR platforms. Across projects, we prioritize performative prototyping: a hands-on method that blends movement, improvisation, and rapid iteration in embodied design.
AXR Lab is not just a place, it is an evolving ecology. We are part of a growing national and international XR infrastructure that connects research, education, and innovation. Through this network, we aim to explore new forms of storytelling, interaction, and social engagement and to imagine the futures we want to live in.
